DIY Large Wooden Candy Canes
Once again, I made my very own lawn ornaments out of wood. This time for Christmas I decided to make a couple of large Candy Cane lawn ornaments. I wanted something to welcome my guests as they enter our front porch.
All I needed for this project was a large piece of wood, ruler, pencils, a jigsaw, power sander or sand paper and some acrylic paint. I first determined how long I wanted the entire candy cane to be, and then I decided to have my candy cane arch go down about 1/3 of the way. With a pencil and the help of a ruler I sketched out my candy cane with them facing opposite sides.
Once I was done stenciling out my candy canes, it was time to start cutting them out with my jig-saw. I made sure I had my wood piece securely placed on a set of saw-horses before cutting. You can also use a table, but make sure to slowly cut your pieces one step at a time so that you can rotate your wood to avoid cutting your actual table. Don’t forget to use gloves and safety glasses!
Now that your pieces are cut, it’s time to start sanding down those pieces! It’s important to sand down any wood pieces because it gives a clean finish to your pieces when you start painting. Your work ends up looking more professional as well.
Now for the relaxing part…paint! I really enjoy the painting part, even though I do not consider myself a painter. I’m not great at painting but who cares! This is the joy of DIY projects. I would pencil in the lines or details of your project before painting. Not too dark of a mark but a light pencil in so you know where the lines will be in your project. Once your piece finishes drying, you can top it off with a spray sealer to protect it from the elements. I did not fastened a spike or stand on these candy canes because I want them flush with our from gates. These are such a great added touch to your outdoor lighting display or even if you wanted to spice up your indoor decorations. The possibilities are endless!
